Margaret Mitchell
Professor
Theatre Arts
Margaret Mitchell, Professor of Theatre, has been teaching at UIW for
fifteen years. She holds and M.F.A. in Costume Design and Technology
from UT Austin, and a BA in Theatre Arts from Texas Wesleyan College.
Ms. Mitchell has been designing costumes and scenery professionally for 18 years. Her designs have been exhibited at the McNay Art Museum, at many venues for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, and her work has represented the United States three times at the Prague Quadrennial, the most prestigious international theatre design competition in the profession.
Ms. Mitchell has designed for the Shakespeare Festival of Dallas, Texas Stage, Stage West, Zachary Scott Theatre, The Fort Worth Theatre, Capitol City Play House, the Austin Shakespeare Festival, and the Zilker Park Summer Musicals. She recently designed costumes for new production of The Odyssey in Wellington, New Zealand. She is the liaison between UIW and our sister school, Te Whea, Toi Whaakari O Aotearoa/ The New Zealand Drama School, and she enjoys long term collaborations with her colleagues there.
Ms. Mitchell is an member of the International, Scenery and Costume Commissions of USITT, and she is also a member of Scenography Commission and Costume Working group of OISTAT, the International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians. Ms. Mitchell’s design students have attended graduate school at CALARTS, Tisch School for the Arts, University of Washington and Carnegie Melon; her students are working in regional theatre, on Broadway, and in the film and television industry.
