William Gokelman
Professor
Music
William Gokelman is the Chair of the Music Department, and Director of
Liturgical Music, at the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio,
where he directs the University Chorale, Madrigals, and Chapel Choir, and
teaches piano, vocal coaching, and conducting. William is also on staff
at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, where he serves as a cantor,
pianist/organist, and directs the 9:00 Choir. For eight years, William
was a keyboard artist with the San Antonio Symphony, and often performed
chamber music concerts with members of the orchestra. In 2004, William
was signed as a recording artist/composer with Good For The Soul Music.
William has presented many workshops, nationally and regionally, in the areas of liturgical music, especially for cantors, pianists, and music directors. As a pianist, he has performed frequently in showcases and concerts for the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Texas Choral Directors’ Association, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. From 1988-1992, William was the principle accompanist and assistant director of New Jersey’s Pro Arte Chorale, which performs major works regularly with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic, and performed for Pope John Paul II while touring in Italy.
William has liturgical music arrangements (choral and instrumental) published by GIA Publications, OCP Publications, and Good For The Soul Music, and has composed music for various major liturgical functions, including the conference theme song and responsorial psalm for the 1997 Southwest Liturgical Conference. Since 1998, William has been collaborating with David Kauffman as arranger and pianist. In June 2004, William released Steal Away, his first CD of original instrumental music for piano with various other instruments.
During the past 20 years, William has served as musical director for several theatrical companies, and in 1994 earned the Alamo Theater Arts Community GLOBE Award for his musical direction of Cottonpatch Gospel at the University of the Incarnate Word. He also received the UIW Presidential Teaching Award in 2006.
William holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Incarnate Word College, where he earned the Amy Freeman Lee Award for the Arts and Humanities, and a Master of Music degree in vocal coaching and accompanying from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, where he was awarded the Alfred E. Merron Award for Accompanying.
