Autobiographical Sketch
Born in Chicago of Southern parents, I grew up in Louisiana. Having attended several different elementary schools, I received a scholarship to Ursuline Academy in New Orleans and graduated from there in 1954. Upon graduation I entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and studied at Incarnate Word College.

From 1957-60, I taught seventh grade at St. Mary Magdalen’s Elementary School in San Antonio. Then, I went to IWC to work in the Registrar’s Office and to teach part-time until I made my final vows as a CCVI in 1962. My religious superiors decided at that point that I should pursue a Master’s degree in Speech and Drama at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Having obtained the MA, I returned to IWC and taught courses in English, Speech, and Drama. Then, in 1968 I enrolled in the doctoral program in theatre at the University of Illinois. My Ph.D. in Theatre, with an emphasis in American Theatre History, was awarded in June, 1971, and I returned to teaching at IWC the following fall.

When Sr. Margaret Patrice Slattery was appointed President of IWC in 1972 I became the Academic Dean and served in that capacity for four years. After a year’s sabbatical in a contemplative House of Prayer in south Texas, I transferred religious communities and went to the Carmelite Monastery in Cleveland, Ohio.

However in 1980, my parents’ illness caused me to return to Texas. Then I was assigned to being a caregiver for my elderly parents in New Orleans. Upon their deaths I returned to San Antonio and returned to teaching in the Theatre Department. In 1996 I founded the Extended Run Players, a readers’ theatre company that performs both on and off campus. Since 2005 I have been semi-retired, but continue to teach at least one course a semester and to direct the Extended Run Players.
